Eurokey announces Tesco contract

Eurokey has announced that it will be working in partnership with sustainable food packaging manufacturer, Faerch, to provide a closed-loop solution for Tesco’s used back-of-store rigid trays recycling them into primary food contact trays or pots.

The solution will see Eurokey collect and process 2,000 tonnes of retail-ready packaging trays sorting them into their respective polymer types. These are then baled and transported to Faerch’s tray recycling facility in the Netherlands where they are flaked and washed before being supplied to manufacturing sites across Europe.

The sorting of these materials will soon be brought to the UK when Eurokey opens its new ‘supermarket sorting line’ at its site in Kettering, Northamptonshire.  Once complete this exciting new piece of UK recycling infrastructure will be capable of processing 70,000 tonnes of supermarket films and flexible plastics every year. In doing so, Eurokey will be a key enabler in the development of several new closed-loop packaging solutions for some of the UK’s largest grocery brands.
